SangMarie Celebration

The feast of the Assumption of Mary (Sang Marie) first occurred in the summer of 1993 in Atlanta, Georgia. This was when Fr. Anthony Gabisi was in the USA for his missionary work to generate funds for the Diocese of Banjul.

In 1997, we started having Sang Marie masses at IHM Catholic Church. Sang Marie’s birth was the catalyst that inspired other sister organizations namely: GCPA Dallas, GCPA Metro D.C., North Carolina, United Kingdom, Sweden, and Norway to come together as a community .

In 2018, the city of Atlanta presented GCO with a proclamation to commemorate our twenty five years of existence and contribution/volunteerism to the city of Atlanta.

In 2019, we were blessed to be graced by the first Gambian Catholic Bishop, his most revered, Dr. Gabriel Mendy, a memorable highlight in our history. His visit was marked with pomp and pageantry beginning with a cultural night on Friday. GCO was the first Gambian Organized Christian Society his Lordship visited outside of The Gambia a year after his inauguration.

Sang Marie begins with a high mass which is celebrated on Saturday followed by a grand reception. To close the weekend’s festivities, a family picnic is held on Sunday at a nearby park.
